Card Scheme Project Manager

The Role Description
This role manages end-to-end onboarding of new card programmes, working with clients and internal teams to deliver smooth implementation and launch. It covers the full lifecycle from initial scoping through scheme implementation to business-as-usual handover.

The role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams and solid card scheme knowledge to translate scheme rules into practical implementation. It offers exposure to diverse projects and the opportunity to contribute to scalable processes and the development of the card issuing proposition.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and manage client relationships throughout the card scheme project lifecycle, acting as the primary point of contact for scheme-related initiatives.
• Collaborate closely with Project Lead to coordinate client communication and ensure smooth, timely programme launches.
• Develop and maintain project plans to track tasks, monitor progress, and communicate updates to internal stakeholders.
• Work with Onboarding, Monitoring, Compliance, Legal, and Finance teams to ensure regulatory alignment and robust financial performance.
• Serve as a subject matter expert on card issuing products, providing guidance both internally and externally.
• Manage relationships with card vendors and issuing processors critical to card issuance and processing.
• Engage with partners such as Mastercard, UnionPay International, Discover, Apple, Google, certification labs to enable bespoke card issuing products.
• Ensure continuity of information during handover to Operations and Client Relations teams.
• Build and enhance card scheme project related processes to improve efficiency and project delivery outcomes.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate risks and issues that may impact project delivery, implementing effective solutions as needed.

Skill and Experience

• Experience in project management or client delivery within the payments industry is desirable.
• Proven track record in managing customer-facing projects and delivering complex initiatives is a plus.
• Solid knowledge of card issuing and payment processing, including prepaid, debit, and credit products; BIN sponsorship; card processing; and network requirements (Mastercard, Union Pay International, Discover) would be beneficial. Experience with card schemes, personalisation bureaus, and digital wallet providers (Apple Pay, Google Pay) is considered an advantage.
• Familiarity with compliance and regulatory considerations, including KYC, AML, and PCI-DSS
• Strong ability to manage internal and external stakeholders to successfully deliver projects and card programme launches.
• Good communication skills, interpersonal, verbal, written and presentation. Proficiency in English is essential.
• Comfortable working under pressure, managing multiple priorities, and adapting to shifting demands in a fast-paced environment.
• Hands-on, proactive, and able to take ownership of tasks and projects from start to finish.

Essential Requirements

• English level B2 or higher, both written and spoken – mandatory
• Previous experience working in banking, fintech, payments or project management roles is a strong advantage.
• Proficiency in using Microsoft tools
