Head of Open Deck Department

We are a fast-growing dispatch company specializing in open-deck freight (flatbed, stepdeck, conestoga). We’re hiring a Head of Open Deck Department to build, manage, and elevate a team of dispatchers dedicated to open-deck operations — working in sync with U.S. time zones.

Why this role matters

As Head of Open Deck, you’ll be the architect of how our flatbed and stepdeck operations run. You will establish structure, coach dispatchers, and translate precision into stronger margins, better driver retention, and top-rated customer satisfaction. This is a role for someone who thrives on discipline, decision-making, and operational excellence.

What you will lead
• Dispatcher team leadership: set clear goals, coach consistently, and enforce accountability across open-deck lanes.
• Operational model design: build simple, repeatable processes, define service standards, implement quality controls, and align on KPIs that scale.
• Daily load management: smart load allocation, route efficiency, pickup and delivery oversight, and quick resolution of issues.
• Driver & carrier relations: ensure owner-operators and company drivers are supported, engaged, and productive.
• Customer partnerships: accurate ETAs, proactive communication, rapid problem resolution.
• Unit economics: higher RPM, fewer empty miles, stronger backhauls, and consistent detention/layover reduction.
• Compliance oversight: Hours of Service, DOT rules, ELDs, permits, insurance, and safety best practices.
• Tech & reporting: optimize use of TMS, build KPI dashboards (Power BI / Sheets), and push automation for efficiency.
• Executive alignment: provide transparent reporting on financials, risks, and operational performance.

What success looks like
• Reliable, on-time pickups and deliveries.
• Average RPM trending up, empty miles trending down.
• Dispatchers meeting and exceeding weekly KPIs.
• Drivers motivated, safe, and consistently retained.
• Customers rating communication and service as excellent.
• Detention, layovers, and service failures reduced quarter over quarter.

Your background
• 4+ years in dispatch or logistics, with proven open-deck experience (flatbed, stepdeck, conestoga).
• Strong leadership background — or high potential to grow into a department head role.
• In-depth knowledge of U.S. freight market: seasonality, lanes, pricing, DOT compliance.
• Proficiency with TMS, Excel/Google Sheets, Power BI dashboards, and KPI analysis.
• Clear communication style, calm under pressure, sharp prioritization.
• Willing to work a schedule aligned with U.S. hours.
